As of its June 1, 2026 reissue, the U.S. State Department lists the Republic of Cyprus at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest level, calling it generally safe for travelers. Always check the latest advisory before you fly. Travel insurance with medical cover is still strongly recommended: the EU EHIC and UK GHIC give access to state care, but they do not cover everything or repatriation.

While Cyprus is a safe and welcoming destination, travel insurance protects you against unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip interruption, lost luggage, and flight delays. Cyprus is popular for diving (including the Zenobia wreck off Larnaca, one of the best wreck dives in the Mediterranean), so if you plan to dive, sail, or do other watersports, confirm those activities are covered, ideally including hyperbaric (decompression) treatment.
Hospital visits, medications, emergency evacuation

These are examples to compare, not an official ranking. Read the policy wording carefully for medical treatment, emergency evacuation, water activities, pre-existing conditions, and cancellation rules.

Many of the busy resort beaches, such as Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa and Coral Bay near Paphos, are lifeguarded in summer and fly a flag system, so swim between the flags. The sea is warm roughly from May to November. Check conditions before swimming at quieter spots, and keep valuables in your hotel safe.
Use licensed taxis and confirm the fare or that the meter is running before you set off. If you rent a car, remember that Cyprus drives on the left, speeds are in km/h, and seatbelts are compulsory. Drive defensively, as rural roads can be narrow.
Stick to well-lit, tourist-friendly areas. Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar neighborhoods late at night. Use hotel-arranged transport.
Don't flash expensive jewelry or electronics. Use hotel safes. Keep a copy of your passport and leave the original in your safe.
