Venetian walls and Ledra Street
Nicosia Old Town is the historic core of the Cypriot capital, enclosed by the star-shaped Venetian walls built between 1567 and 1570. Eleven heart-shaped bastions give the old city its distinctive circular outline, still clear on any map. Nicosia is the world's last divided capital, and this guide covers the south side, within the Republic of Cyprus.
The main artery is Ledra Street, a pedestrian shopping lane lined with cafes, shops and historic buildings. At its northern end is the Ledra Street crossing point, where a pedestrian checkpoint marks the dividing line through the city. Around the walled centre you can explore restored quarters such as Laiki Geitonia, the Cyprus Museum with its archaeological collections, and several churches and mosques.
The compact centre is best seen on foot, wandering from the bastions and moat gardens into the lattice of narrow streets. The Famagusta Gate, one of the original entrances through the walls, has been restored as a cultural venue. Nicosia makes an inland contrast to the coastal cities of Larnaca and Limassol.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled lanes, carry your passport if you intend to use the pedestrian crossing point, and set aside time for the Cyprus Museum near the walls.
