Winter flamingos at Larnaca Salt Lake
Watch wintering flamingos and migratory birds at Larnaca Salt Lake, a wetland that fills in winter and dries to a salt crust in summer. Best from December to February.
The Larnaca Salt Lake is a group of shallow lakes on the edge of Larnaca, close to the airport. In winter the basins fill with rainwater and draw flocks of greater flamingos that feed on the brine shrimp in the salty water. In summer the lakes dry out to a white salt crust, so the birdwatching is strictly a cold-season activity.
Flamingos generally arrive from around November and stay into late February or March, with December to February the most reliable window for large numbers. The lake also supports many other migratory and wetland species through the season, so a walk here rewards birdwatchers beyond the flamingos alone. A footpath and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque sit on the shore.
This is a free, self-guided activity, and there is no entry fee or booking. The birds keep their distance, so binoculars or a long lens help if you want a close look. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light and the calmest water for reflections across the lake. The flamingos can shift between the separate basins from day to day, so it is worth checking more than one viewpoint along the lakeshore before you decide the birds are not about.
Come in the cooler months for the birds, bring binoculars and wear shoes that handle muddy ground, and keep your distance so you do not flush the flocks.
