Seasonal salt lake with winter flamingos
Larnaca Salt Lake is a complex of shallow lakes just south of Larnaca, close to the airport. Its character changes with the seasons. In winter the basin fills with rainwater and becomes a feeding ground for migrating birds, while in the dry heat of summer it shrinks back and a white salt crust covers the lake bed.
The winter draw is the flamingos. From roughly November to March, large numbers of greater flamingos and many other migratory species gather to feed, and a walking and cycling path along the shore lets you watch them from a distance. The lake is a protected area, so the birds should be observed without disturbance.
On the western bank stands the Hala Sultan Tekke, a mosque set among palm trees and built over the tomb of Umm Haram, an early figure in Islamic history. It is an important pilgrimage site and welcomes respectful visitors. The lake sits within easy reach of the city seafront at Finikoudes Beach and the historic Church of Saint Lazarus in town.
Bring binoculars for the birds, keep a respectful distance in the protected area, and visit in winter or early spring if seeing flamingos is your goal.
Flamingos usually gather from around November to March, when winter rain fills the lake and migrating birds stop to feed. In summer the lake dries to a salt crust and the flamingos move on.

It changes completely. In summer the basin dries out and a white salt crust covers the lake bed, which has its own stark appeal, but the flamingos and full water are a winter sight.
