Byzantine church over the tomb of Lazarus
The Church of Saint Lazarus, or Agios Lazaros, stands in the centre of Larnaca, a short walk from the seafront promenade. It is named for Lazarus of Bethany, whom the Gospel of John records as raised from the dead by Christ. Tradition holds that Lazarus later came to Cyprus and became bishop of the city, and the church was built over his reputed tomb.
The present stone church dates from the late 9th century and is one of the most important surviving Byzantine buildings on the island. Inside, the dark, ornate interior centres on a carved and gilded iconostasis, and a stair leads down to a crypt beneath the sanctuary where stone sarcophagi can be seen. A small museum beside the church holds religious objects.
The church anchors a square of cafes and shops just back from the coast. It pairs naturally with a walk along Finikoudes Beach and a drive out to the Larnaca Salt Lake. As a working church, modest dress is expected and services may limit access at certain times.
Cover shoulders and knees before entering, check service times if you want a quiet visit, and take the stairs down to the crypt, which is easy to overlook.
