Troodos wine village around a monastery
Omodos is a traditional wine village high in the Troodos mountains, in the Limassol district at around 800 metres in the Krassochoria, the wine-growing villages of the southern slopes. Its cobbled square, stone houses and small family wineries make it one of the most visited villages on the mountain.
The village grew up around the monastery of Timios Stavros, the Holy Cross, which sits at its centre. The monastery has Byzantine roots and, by tradition, holds relics linked to the Holy Cross. Around the square you find tavernas, wineries offering tastings, and shops selling local products such as zivania spirit, sweet preserves, handmade lace and arkatena bread.
The pleasure of Omodos is wandering its lanes, sampling village wine and seeing the old wine and zivania presses preserved nearby. The grapes of these slopes feed Commandaria, the historic sweet wine also tied to Kolossi Castle near Limassol. Omodos combines well with other Troodos stops such as Kykkos Monastery and the high peak of Mount Olympus.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles, dress modestly to enter the monastery, and bring a light layer, as the mountain village is cooler than the coast.
