The highest peak in Cyprus
Mount Olympus, known locally as Chionistra, is the highest peak in Cyprus at 1,952 metres, crowning the Troodos mountains in the centre of the island. The name Chionistra comes from the Greek word for snow, a nod to the cover that lingers on the upper slopes through winter. The actual summit is closed off by radar stations, but the surrounding area is open and well worth the drive.
In winter the mountain hosts Cyprus's only ski area, with runs spread across the Sun Valley and North Face sections. It is small by Alpine standards, but the chance to ski in the morning and reach the coast the same day is part of its appeal. In the warmer months the snow gives way to walking country, with cool pine forest where the coast is hot.
Several nature trails circle below the summit, including the Artemis Trail, a gentle loop through old black pines at around 1,850 metres with long views over the ridges. The high road links to other Troodos stops such as Kykkos Monastery and the wine village of Omodos.
Bring warm layers even in summer, as the air is much cooler than the coast, check road and weather conditions in winter, and carry water on the trails.
