Dark sand and white chalk cliffs east of Limassol
Governor's Beach sits on the south coast east of Limassol, on the way toward Larnaca. Its character comes from the contrast between bright white chalk cliffs and the dark grey sand and rock below. The cliffs reach down to the water and form a series of small coves and natural pools, sheltered from the wind, that are good for swimming and snorkelling. The shoreline runs for around two kilometres, with the rock formations breaking it into separate swimming spots.
The name comes from the British colonial period, when it was a recreation spot for officials, who are said to have been reminded of chalk-cliff coasts back home. Today the main coves are organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, and a cluster of fish tavernas and cafes sits on the low cliffs above, with steps down to the sand. The smaller coves stay quieter and are good for a calmer swim away from the crowds. The white rock formations against the dark sand make the whole stretch distinctive among the south coast beaches.
Governor's Beach is an easy stop on the Limassol-to-Larnaca coast. Combine it with the Limassol sights, such as Ancient Kourion and Kolossi Castle, or with the long, shallow Lady's Mile Beach west of the city. The Larnaca seafront beaches, including Finikoudes Beach, lie further east.
Governor's Beach is on the south coast of the Republic of Cyprus, east of Limassol on the way toward Larnaca, near the boundary between the two districts.
