Greco-Roman city with a clifftop theatre
Ancient Kourion stands on a bluff above the sea near Episkopi, about 16 km west of Limassol. It was one of the most important city-kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, and the ruins spread across a clifftop with the Mediterranean as a backdrop. The site rewards a slow visit, as the buildings are spread out across the headland.
The Greco-Roman theatre is the signature monument, restored and still used for summer performances, with rows of seating curving toward the sea. Just east of it, the House of Eustolios preserves detailed mosaic floors and an inscription that records the shift from the old worship of Apollo to Christianity. Other remains include public baths, an early Christian basilica and a forum.
Kourion is part of a broader cluster of antiquities west of Limassol. A short drive away sits the medieval Kolossi Castle, and the coast road continues toward the mythical Aphrodite's Rock. Closer to town you can see the medieval Limassol Castle.
Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven paths, bring water and a hat, and start in the morning to walk the open headland before the heat peaks.

Yes. The restored theatre hosts open-air events in the summer season, including ancient Greek drama, concerts and other productions, taking advantage of its acoustics and the sea backdrop.
Very little. The site is exposed on the clifftop, though the mosaics of the House of Eustolios are protected under modern shelters. Bring water, a hat and sun cover, and visit in the morning in summer.
