Ayia Napa's white-sand bay with a wade-out islet
Nissi Beach runs along its own cove on the western edge of Ayia Napa, about 500 metres of fine white sand against shallow, clear water. The beach takes its name from the small islet (nissi means island in Greek) just offshore, which you can reach on foot through knee-deep water when a natural sandbar forms. That sandbar, the gentle entry and the pale sand are what put Nissi on most lists of Cyprus beaches.
It is a busy, organised beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas cover much of the sand in high season, watersports operators run jet skis and inflatables, and beach bars play music through the afternoon, so the mood is social rather than quiet. The water stays shallow a good way out, which suits families and weaker swimmers, though the crowds and the party reputation mean early mornings are the calmest time to come. Daytime beach parties run here through the summer, drawing a younger crowd, while the western end of the cove tends to stay a little quieter.
Nissi sits a short drive from the quieter Landa Beach and the three sheltered coves of Makronissos Beach to the west. For calm, family swimming away from the music, the sheltered Konnos Bay near Protaras is an easy day trip, and the headland walks of Cape Greco are close by.
Nissi Beach is on the western edge of Ayia Napa, in the Famagusta district of the Republic of Cyprus (the government-controlled south). It is one of the best-known beaches on the island.
Yes, when a natural sandbar forms you can wade across to the small islet through shallow, knee-deep water. Only do it when the water is calm and the sandbar is exposed.
The shallow, gentle water suits families and younger swimmers. It is a busy, lively beach with music and watersports, so mornings are the calmest time for families to visit.
