Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

Petra tou Romiou, widely called Aphrodite's Rock, is a cluster of sea stacks rising from a pebble bay along the coast road between Paphos and Limassol. In Greek mythology this is where Aphrodite, goddess of love, rose from the sea foam, and that story is the main reason the spot draws so many visitors.

The setting works on two levels. From the viewpoint and rest area above the road you get the classic wide shot of the rocks against the open sea. Down at shore level, a pebble beach lets you swim near the stacks, though the stones are large and the water can be choppy when the wind is up. There is no resort development here, which keeps the focus on the coastline itself.

Seeing it at its best

Sunset is the popular time, when the low light catches the rocks and the sea. The beach has no shade and the pebbles are hard underfoot, so water shoes help. The site sits within the Paphos district, an easy stop on a drive that can also take in Ancient Kourion toward Limassol.
