Mythical sea stack on the Paphos coast
Petra tou Romiou, widely called Aphrodite's Rock, is a cluster of sea stacks rising from a pebble bay along the coast road between Paphos and Limassol. In Greek mythology this is where Aphrodite, goddess of love, rose from the sea foam, and that story is the main reason the spot draws so many visitors.
The setting works on two levels. From the viewpoint and rest area above the road you get the classic wide shot of the rocks against the open sea. Down at shore level, a pebble beach lets you swim near the stacks, though the stones are large and the water can be choppy when the wind is up. There is no resort development here, which keeps the focus on the coastline itself.
Sunset is the popular time, when the low light catches the rocks and the sea. The beach has no shade and the pebbles are hard underfoot, so water shoes help. The site sits within the Paphos district, an easy stop on a drive that can also take in Ancient Kourion toward Limassol.
Bring water shoes for the pebbles, take care crossing to the beach, and time your visit for late afternoon if you want the softest light.
In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, rose from the sea foam near this sea stack. The Greek name Petra tou Romiou refers to a separate legend about a Byzantine hero. Both stories attach to the same rocks.
Yes, from the pebble beach beside the rocks, but there are no lifeguards and the water can be rough when the wind is up. The beach is large pebbles rather than sand, so water shoes help.
A pedestrian underpass links the car park and viewpoint to the beach across the coast road. Use it rather than crossing the road on foot, as traffic moves quickly along this stretch.
Late afternoon and sunset are the most popular, when the low light catches the rocks and the sea. The viewpoint above the road gives the classic wide photograph of the stacks.
