Dramatic gorge hike in the Akamas
Avakas Gorge cuts through the limestone of the wild Akamas peninsula, in the far west of the island near Polis and Latchi. Over thousands of years a stream has carved a deep, narrow canyon, and the walk in among its towering walls is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Cyprus.
The trail follows the gorge floor, crossing and re-crossing the stream as the walls close in overhead, narrowing in places to just a few metres wide. A large boulder wedged between the cliffs is the well-known turning point for many walkers. The deeper you go, the cooler and shadier it becomes, a contrast to the exposed Akamas scrubland outside.
This is a there-and-back route on uneven, often wet ground, so grippy shoes are essential and the path can be impassable after heavy rain or flash-flood risk. The Akamas is also home to Lara Beach, a turtle nesting beach, and the calm water of the Blue Lagoon, reached by boat or rough track. Nearby, the Baths of Aphrodite mark the start of coastal trails.
Wear shoes with grip that can get wet, carry plenty of water, start early to avoid the heat on the approach, and check the weather before setting out.

It can be after heavy rain. The gorge channels water and is prone to flash flooding, so it should be avoided during or just after storms. Check the forecast before setting out.
It cuts through the Akamas peninsula in the far west, near Polis and Latchi. It combines well with the Blue Lagoon and the turtle nesting sands of Lara Beach on an Akamas day.
Bring plenty of water, wear shoes with grip that can get wet, and carry sun protection for the exposed approach. Start early to avoid the midday heat before you reach the shaded gorge.
